Punch, June 16th 1909, p.425, shows the issue raised at the Commonwealth Conference of the high Cable rates for international communication. Any knotty issue seems to call for direct reference to that noble piece of antique statuary so beloved of the aesthetician (Lessing, Winckelman etc etc). Punch used the motif at least twenty times that I can recall. This is a late drawing by Lindley Sambourne, rather lazy in places. If you look closely the obscurity of the issue has forced him to spell out CABLE RATE in the coils of the cable. How are the Mighty fallen ! Or strangled.
